Lexus “Future Proof” :30
I served as both Creative Director and VFX Supervisor on Lexus’ "Future Proof" commercial, collaborating closely with director Rich Lee to bring the futuristic world to life. My role began with developing the look of the animatronic style delivery robot, working through extensive references and concept art to refine its design.
On set, I oversaw all VFX-related elements, including consulting, data acquisition, and ensuring seamless interaction between the robot and live-action talent—critical for eye-line accuracy. With the production shutting down streets in LA, I led the capture of essential on-set data such as LIDAR scans, photogrammetry, lighting references, and camera tracking information. Other VFX elements included FX work on a crashing pizza-delivering drone, HUD design and comp pon a delivery bot, fully CG car packshot, and many other 2D cleanup and replacement tasks. This groundwork onset ensured that all 3D and 2D visual effects could be seamlessly integrated in post-production, maintaining the high level of realism and polish Lexus is known for.
It was a super collaborative process when designing the hero robot character. This character was a nod to today’s tech that is not quite ready yet- unlike the innovative technology offering from Lexus. Rich the director was inspired by prototype style bots like Boston Dynamic’s Atlas, so we started with a wide net doing studies on bodies, head, faces, and all sorts of details…
These ideas were refined and a first round of concepts were roughed out….… We decided to keep this robot based on today’s reality rather that futuristic. Camera irises for eyes, hydraulic pistons, and a bit of a look that feels not ready for product but rather beta release. We wanted this character to feel a bit vulnerable and unrefined.
These concepts were developed for weeks and we were happy with what we ended up with.
